North York quietly holds one of the best Chinese food strips in the city, up Yonge Street through Willowdale toward Finch. It is less of a tourist stop than downtown Chinatown and more of a place people actually eat, which is usually the better sign.

Know the kind of place you are in

  • Dim sum houses run at lunch and weekend mornings. Order har gow, siu mai, cheung fun and a green, and pace yourself past the first cart.
  • Noodle and dumpling shops do hand-pulled noodles, wonton soup and dumplings by the dozen. A place making noodles fresh in the window is the one to sit down at.
  • Hong Kong style cafes, the cha chaan teng, do the milk tea, the baked rice, the comfort food. Fast, cheap, open late.
  • Szechuan and hot pot bring the numbing heat. Say mild if you need it, because the default is not built for a nervous palate.
  • Taiwanese spots are worth knowing here too: beef noodle soup, popcorn chicken, bubble tea done properly.
