What does YYZ mean? Toronto's airport code, explained

YYZ is on your luggage tag, your boarding pass, and half the merch in the city. Here is what it stands for and why Toronto's airport code starts with a Y.

What does YYZ mean? Toronto's airport code, explained

You have seen it on a bag tag and a boarding pass. YYZ. It is shorthand for Toronto the way LAX is for Los Angeles, and locals wear it like a badge. But what does YYZ actually mean, and why the Y?

The short answer

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto Pearson International Airport, the main airport serving the city. When people say they are flying into the 6ix, YYZ is where they land.

Why it starts with Y

Here is the part that trips people up. In Canada, most major airport codes begin with Y. It goes back to the early days of radio and rail stations, where a Y often signalled that a station had a weather or radio facility attached. When airport codes were assigned, a lot of Canadian airports inherited a Y at the front, and it stuck.

So the Y is a Canadian quirk, not a Toronto one. The YZ is the part that points at this specific airport. Put together, YYZ became the tag the whole city adopted.

Why it ended up on everything

YYZ works because it is short, it looks good in type, and it means something to anyone who has travelled. It is the traveller's version of city pride. You do not have to explain a skyline drawing to someone who has flown, they just see YYZ and know.

That is exactly why we put it on a tee. Our YYZ shirt sets the code on a split-flap departure board, the kind you used to watch flip over in an airport hall. It sits in the Toronto t-shirt collection at $34.99, next to the 6ix and coordinates designs.

The short version

  • YYZ is the code for Toronto Pearson, the city's main airport.
  • Canadian airport codes tend to start with Y for historical reasons, so Toronto got YYZ.
  • It became city shorthand because it is short, sharp, and instantly readable to anyone who travels. Wear it here.
